About this Item
First edition. Octavo, two volumes: 646 pp. + [ii], 647-1274, ix-xxiii pp. with portraits of leading citizens. In one-half black morocco over black cloth bindings, with gilt-stamped titling, four raised bands, blind-stamped borders, and decorative endpapers. It appears a signature was not bound in the end of the second volume as the last few pages of the short biographies and the first part of the index are missing. Occasional pencil marginalia and offsetting from newspaper clippings. The spines are a touch toned, with some general edgewear to the boards. "Of the half dozen major statewide histories published, this set is considered to be the rarest of all, even surpassing the first edition of Myron Angel's 'Thompson & West.' Likely less than 300 sets were published, only a few dozen of which remain in private hands. Editor Davis has brought together a huge collection of historical essays and special treatises written by about 45 people, though much of it is his own work. It is similar to the 'Thompson & West' history in that it has extensive chapters on geography, Indians, territorial life, law and crime, mining history (especially the Comstock and its water supply, mills, Sutro Tunnel and litigation, 'V' fluming, and square-set timbering), politics, journalism, education, religion, transportation, business and finance, agriculture, social organizations, divorce, the military and reclamation. Each of the 16 existing counties receives a separate chapter written by a local resident" (Stanley W. Paher, Nevada: An Annotated Bibliography, #450).
