372 p. 20 cm. Black and red title page. Full calf with raised bands. Spine chipped at head and torn at tail, cracked at both ends. Front hinge cracked at bottom. Scuffing to bottom front cover. Some thumbing and a few spots, mainly beginning and end. Last few pages including index have discolouration at centre. Title continues: "Contained in a Succession of Twenty nine Kings, Compiled from the Greek and Latin Historians and other Writers, and the Chronology settled." Thomas Lewis (1689-1749?), a controversial preacher, received his BA from Corpus Christi College, Oxford, in 1711 and was ordained in 1713. He was forced into hiding due to the libelous nature of his publication, The Scourge, in Vindication of the Church of England, 1717, in which he criticized Protestant dissenters. He continued to publish controversial writings, however, on such topics as the dangers of burying the dead in churchyards. This history concerns ancient Parthia (modern Iran) with each chapter representing a king's reign. Has margin notes and index. Seller Inventory # 102699
