Add to basketVery Good first edition in original red cloth with scarce original dust jacket. Binding is tight and square. Pages are clean and unmarked aside from a contemporary ownership inscription ("Dr. Sailgau" or similar) on the front free endpaper. Red cloth remains bright with sharp gilt titling to spine. Dust jacket is present but only Fair to Good, showing significant chipping and loss at the spine head, edge wear, toning, and several tears. Despite jacket defects, the book presents well and remains an attractive copy of an increasingly sought-after work by the founder of the history of science as an academic discipline.
George Sarton's The History of Science and the New Humanism is among his most influential works, arguing for the integration of scientific knowledge into the broader humanistic tradition. Originally published in the early twentieth century and reissued here by Harvard University Press, the book reflects Sarton's vision that the history of science provides a bridge between the sciences and the humanities. Through a series of essays and lectures, Sarton explores the cultural significance of scientific achievement and advocates for a more unified understanding of human knowledge.
A foundational text in the historiography of science, this work remains important for scholars of intellectual history, philosophy of science, scientific education, and Renaissance studies. Sarton's writings helped establish the academic framework for the history of science in American universities and influenced generations of historians, scientists, and humanists. Copies retaining the original dust jacket are encountered less frequently than later reprints and library copies.
