Canterbury: Printed for the Author, by Simmons and Kirkby, 1778-1799, FIRST EDITION. In four volumes. Folio (16 ½ inches tall, 42cm). With 167 copper engraved illustrations (as per the Directions to the binder the map of West or Little Barnfield Hundred is incorporated into Vol II at page 365 (see photo), an ADDITIONAL map of The Hundreds of Worth, Newchurch, St Martin s Pountney etc. at page 420 of Vol III, as per the Directions to the Binder in Vol IV), including county and hundred maps, many being full page plates, a good number folding. All plates complete as in the Direction to the Binder at the back of each volume Folding Kent county map to Vol. I bound in after the title. Repaired closed tears without loss to the large map of Kent. Vol I [4], xii, clii, 580, 42, [2]pp; Vol II [4], 817, [1], 72pp; Vol III [4], ii, 765,[1], 51, [3]pp; Vol IV vi, 788, 46, [2]pp. Very heavy set. All tightly bound and structurally solid. Provenance: bokplate for Doddington Library to the front paste down. Approximately 16 inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition new spines to the original boards, gilt titles to red and black labels, blind stamped decorated compartments. Joints good condition solid, professionally repaired. Corners good condition bumped and worn. Boards good condition full leather, worn marked and scratched, solid. Page edges good condition top edges darkened, all tanned. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition intact, repaired. Paste downs good condition tanned and foxed, bookplate to the front. End papers good condition tanned and foxed. Title good condition tanned and foxed. Pages good condition tanned with foxing and offsetting from the plates, maps tanned and foxed, with repaired closed tears to folds of the large map of Kent. See photos. Publisher: see above.
