A very rare copy of this landmark book by Alexander Ross, which has undergone professional restoration using traditional conservation methods and retaining the original leather. Half-title, title in red and black with engraved vignette of historian between allegorical figures of war and peace , browned, damp-stained towards end.  Very scarce with this imprint with only six copies listed by ESTC. A prolific writer and 'Chaplain-in-Ordinary' to King Charles I, Ross set out to complete Raleigh's celebrated work of the same title (1614), one of the most ambitious undertakings of the 17th century. It covers the period where Raleigh left off, before the birth of Christ, to the end of 1640, representing the ecclesiastical and civil passages of the greatest states, empires and kingdoms of the times. Ross was born in Aberdeen, educated at King's College before rising to become one of the most prolific conversationalists of his era, this book representing the pinnacle of his works.…
