Small, neat gift inscription on first blank page, corner of flyleaf clipped 1" else Fine in a Fair jacket--chips on front, front flap detached but present with $2.50 original price, jacket separated along front joint. Restorable, but offered in its unsophisticated state. In mylar however it looks quite presentable. The state-of the-art biblliography, Underhill's "First Edition Hardback Hobbits (US)" list four points for the 1st state, all of which are present here: the bowing Hobbit on the title-page, lacking a half-title page, Chapter VI for Chapter VII, and the endpaper maps in the incorrect order (Wilderland first). This corresponds to Hammond's less detailed description of the first state.
