The Hobbit, first edition, fourth impression. One of 4,000 copies dated 1946, though not published until November 18, 1947. Printed under the lingering wartime restrictions following World War II, generally a fragile edition, but here finely and expertly rebound. Bound in later full green morocco with gilt rules to covers, five raised bands on the spine, gilt compartments and lettering to the spine. Externally fine. With, Thror's Map, as front endpapers and, Wilderland Map, as back endpapers. A color frontispiece and eight black and white illustrations by Tolkien. The interior is clean and clear with no markings, notes, or spotting. Additional photographs available upon request.
