First American edition, first state with a bowing hobbit on the title page, and Chapter VII mistakenly titles Chapter VI. Bound in publisher's original buff cloth stamped in blue and red; lacking the dust jacket. Very Good with light marking to bottom of spine, spine ends and corners worn, spine toned. Pages toned, bookplate removal to first blank sheet, several hinges slightly exposed and some sporadic soiling. Tolkien's fantasy masterpiece, with illustrations by the author.
