Set of 8 embossed chromolithographed Victorian scrap paper figures, consisting of 4 children riders and their 4 steeds--"the noble horse, the faithful dog, the docile donkey, and the frisky goat." The children include 2 handsomely dressed girls, a boy dressed as a jockey, and a boy in hunting kit. The steeds are ca. 7 x 4 inches; the riders are ca. 5 x 2 inches. Repairs to some of the animals' legs; one replacement leg. In original envelope (rubbed, flap missing), which is inscribed in pencil "To Ruby, A Merry Christmas with Love from Cora C. Hatch." The riders are tabbed on the back so they can sit in the saddle, and the animals' legs are tabbed so they can stand upright (if a little shakily). No. 576 in an unknown series. Wolf Hagelberg was a Berlin lithographer, known for his fashionable greeting cards and "hold to light" postcards. A delightful and scarce example of Victorian Christmas gift giving.
