This copy with an authorial inscription on front free endpaper, however the corner with the recipients name has been torn off. The remaining part of the inscription reads: "with kind regards from / The Author / Welln. 1st Feb 97" [Wellington, New Zealand, 1897]. Abrasions and small chips to front pastedown endpaper where a bookplate has been removed. Otherwise very good.; xii, 337 pages. Green cloth boards with gilt and red illustration on front board. Gilt lettering and small illustration on spine. Page dimensions: 218 x 141mm. Top page edges gilt. Numerous illustrations, some full page. The frontipiece and other full page illustrations are all within the pagination. The illustrations are from photographs, reproduced in a half-tone process. "Intended at first for private circulation only, this description of what I saw and thought on my trip from Wellington, New Zealand, visiting Napier, Gisborne, Auckland, Bay of Islands, Sydney, Katoomba, Hobart, Melbourne, Adelaide, Colombo, Kandy, Port Said, Naples, Pompeii, Rome, Tangier, Cadiz, Seville, Cordova, Granada, Malaga, and Gibraltar, to the shores of England, after thirty years' absence in the Colony of New Zealand, is now thrown upon the tender mercies of The Public, to success or fail by its own merits.
