Translated from the Norwegian by Eugene Gay-Tifft. 322 pages. hardcover. keywords: Europe Scandinavia Norway Literature Translated World Literature. DESCRIPTION - Sandemose's A FUGITIVE CROSSES HIS TRACKS stirred up an unusual amount of excitement: while some critics hailed it as the work of a genius and others were merely puzzled by it, all agreed that it was a unique work and that its author is an original. But this new novel is even more merciless in its analysis of the subconscious mind, even franker in its description of human passions, even stranger in its physical construction. A story of six men on a small freight ship during a voyage from Norway to Iceland and from there to Newfoundland, it explores the souls of these men in their best and wont aspects. They are all a little queer - one is a defrocked priest - and all are suffering from some fear, inhibition, or disappointment. The story is full of wild and delirious incidents. There is a fantastic rat-hunt on board ship and an orgiastic drinking-party when they meet the crew of another ship in port. There are fist-fights and scenes that are plainly sadistic. But there are tenderness and poetry in the book too. Each chapter is furnished with a prologue and epilogue consisting of anecdotes, allegories, aphorisms, or reflections which have a symbolic significance. Some may say that this is a mad book, some that it is divinely sane. But whoever reads it will almost certainly be absorbed by it and will understand why Sandemose has attracted so much attention in every country in which he has been published. inventory #6419 Very Good in Slightly Worn Dustjacket.
