There is a fantastic rat-hunt on board ship and an orgiastic drinking-party when they meet the crew of another ship in port. There are fist-fights and scenes that are plainly sadistic. But there are tenderness and poetry in the book too. Each chapter is furnished with a prologue and epilogue consisting of anecdotes, allegories, aphorisms, or reflections which have a symbolic significance. Some may say that this is a mad book, some that it is divinely sane.
