The first edition of this novel by Eric Linklater. With the original, unclipped dustwrapper. This novel follows Linklater's Laxdale Hall and is set in the mid twentieth century. According to the description on the front flyleaf 'its theme is fraud, the gullibility and greed of respectable people, the vanity of swindlers and the mixed motives of those who expose them.' The story is told through the narrator and the novel has a tense atmosphere. With the pen inscription of Hermione Ranfurly, likely to be Hermione, Countess of Ranfurly. She was notable for her popular wartime memoirs To War With Whittaker: The Wartime Diaries of the Countess of Ranfurly. Eric Linklater was a Welsh-born Scottish writer. He wrote a wide range of works including novels, short stories, military history and travel books. In a full cloth binding with original dustwrapper. Externally, smart with bumping to the head and tail of spine and to the extremities. Slight age toning at tail of spine. Dustwrapper is generally smart with chipping to the head of spine and to the extremities at the top edge. Spine is sunned with a few marks to wraps. Internally some spotting to flyleaves which are chipped. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper 'Ranfurly' dated 1954. Internally, firmly bound.
