The UK premiere of Allen Ginsberg's Howl set to music by Lee Hyla, among other pieces. Helen Wallace, writing in The Times, was not impressed. "A big idea lay behind Lee Hyla's Howl, music written alongside a motu perpetuo recitation of Allen Ginsberg's poem. But if Ginsberg intended Howl to be an 'emotional time bomb exploding that would continue exploding', then its shockwaves are long gone. In sheer volume the words overwhelmed Hyla's music . . ." Howl was first published in 1956; Ginsberg died in 1997.
