Seller: The Reluctant Bookseller, Albany, NY, U.S.A.
Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. An exceptional association copy - inscribed by Boyle ( as Kay ) to writer, historian, journalist William Shirer. The first edition, published by Whittlesey House of McGraw Hill books in 1949. A near fine example of the book with just a touch of rubbing at the edges. Dust jacket near fine with light rubbing at the spine ends and some toning to the spine. The inscription reads ' In memory of Joseph, who loved you too, dear Bill. Kay ' Joseph being Boyle's final husband; Baron Joseph von Franckenstein. Both Boyle and von Franckenstein were victims of the anti-communist witch hunts - with von Franckenstein dismissed from his post with the US State Department, and subsequently blackballed. He was finally reinstated ( only to die one year later ) after intense lobbying on his behalf by Shirer and Edward R. Murrow. The inscription displays the resultant depth of the feelings which both of them felt towards Shirer. Shirer also wrote the forward to the 1963 reissue of her book of stories related to occupied Germany; The Smoking Mountain. The book bears Shirer's ownership stamp to the front endpaper.
