First edition, hardcover, bound in russet-colored cloth with gilt lettering on the spine. The boards and spine show handling marks, most notably on the front board. Rear pastedown has soil to the lower corner. Top edge of page block dyed red and shows additional soil and fading extending from the spine toward the lower edge. The preliminary and endpapers are beginning to fox, with light foxing scattered throughout the 192 pages. Water staining to the lower margins of pp. 32?33, 48?49, and 144?145, in places extending into the gutter. Or was he just a typical early-Victorian parish priest whose vocation took second place to his interest in field sports? In seeking answers to these questions, Eleanor Kerr conducted intensive research in the chronicles and periodicals of the time. Her result is a book that will interest lovers of dogs and hunting. In presenting her faithful and factual account of John Russell's full and vigorous life, she also conjures an absorbing and evocative picture of country life as it was lived over a hundred years ago.…
