About this Item
1st Edition, 1st printing - Original green cloth boards with gilt-stamped titling on cover and somewhat faded tilting on spine. 248 pages, with 1 full color plate on frontispiece and 40 full-page plates by Peter Newell. Each page throughout has an elaborate pictorial border by Robert Murray Wright printed in olive-green ink. Peter Newell (1862-1924) started his professional career as a crayon portraitist copying and enhancing photographs for the Clendenon & Nichols photography studio in the small town of Jacksonville, Illinois. In the spring of 1883 he had moved to New York where he enrolled in classes at the Art Students' League. . It was Harper's who chose Newell, by now a very famous artist, to re-interpret Lewis Carroll's classics for the new generation. The first of the three was "Alice in Wonderland" published in 1901 and causing quite a stir for its departure from the traditional Tenniel illustrations. Each was issued as a boxed "Peter Newell Edition" and enjoyed great popularity. They are regarded as among the most important of all the more than forty books he would illustrate over a long career.
