Octavo, xvi, 347pp, [1], [4pp ads]. Brown textured cloth, title stamped in gilt on front cover, gilt on spine. Floral endpapers. Frontispiece with tissue cover, complete with 25 full-page illustrations. Solid binding, solid hinges. Trace amount of wear at the head of the spine, and along bottom edge of cloth boards. From the library of Charles L. Gilcrest, with his bookplate on the front pastedown. The first state of the Popular Edition includes an error on the spine, with "Trip," not "Trips" in the title, updated in the second state. Advertisements at rear ending with the title "Cuban Sketches," also updated in the second state. (Cole & Vail, A6.b) (Howes R-430.b) (Wheelock, 9) An exceptional copy, appearing unread. The first edition of Hunting Trips of a Ranchman, known as The Medora Edition, was limited to 500 copies. There were multiple luxury editions offered for sale, including a copy in three-quarter levant, which sold for $22.50. An edition in full seal sold for $27.50, full polished levant for $32.00, and olive crushed levant for $75.00. Roosevelt himself contributed $5,000 towards the publication of this work, but sales were not strong, and he did not recoup his investment until many years later. Seller Inventory # 18393
