The first few pages are loose, but present. Some offsetting to the opposite pages of the plates. Rare. With explanatory observations on Armorial Ensigns. With an appendix of illustrations. (Other works included:) i. Life of Sir William Dugdale . . . written by himself. Ii. Life of Gregory King, Lancaster Herald, from his own manuscript in the Bodleian Library, m. A Catalogue of all the Officers of Arms, from their first establishment to the present time. iv. Editions of books published in England on the Science of Heraldry, v. A genuine copy of the Book of St. Alban's (Armorial Bearings portion), first printed in 1486. Dallaway was born at Bristol in 1763. He was educated at Trinity College, Oxford, from where he graduated BA in 1782, and MA in 1784. He failed to obtain a fellowship there, supposedly because he had written some satirical verses on a senior and influential member of the college. Having been ordained deacon in 1785, Dallaway served as a curate at Rodmarton, Gloucestershire (serving under the Rev. Samuel Lysons, father of the antiquaries, Daniel and Samuel). He was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1789; and in 1793 he published Inquiries into the Origin and Progress of the Science of Heraldry in England, with Explanatory Observations on Armorial Ensigns. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 1793, 1st. Large Quarto. pp.[4], xiii, [1], 424, [4], cxii. Complete with the engraved title page with vignette of an armoured knight seated by a lake; followed by a half-page engraved coat of arms, plus 25 full-page engraved plates (including hand-coloured), 1 folding genealogical table, and several engraved textual illustrations. Contemporary diced calf with a gilt border, some wear to extremities. Sometime re-backed in a tan calf, gilt ruled with leather title label. The top inch of front hinge has begun to split with a small area of the tip of the spine coming away slightly. Some minor creasing to the leather of the spine. Marbled end papers. The contents are generally in good clean order, with minimal spotting, off-setting etc. Free of former ownership markings. Overall a 'Very Good' copy. Heavy - additional shipping to be advised. Engraved title with vignette, followed by a half-page engraved coat of arms, plus 25 full-page engraved plates (several hand-coloured), 1 folding genealogical table (printed both sides), and several engraved textual illustrations. Bound in contemporary half morocco over marbled boards, elaborately gilt panelled spine between raised bands. Binding a little rubbed at extremities, title with semicircular marginal damp stain and ½" closed tear to outer edge, some offsetting from engraved material, modern bookplate, but overall a very nice copy. The First Edition. "The author of this elegant and erudite work has here, with the pen of a Tacitus, accurately defined, in a most comprehensive manner, the rise and progress of the science of heraldry, from the earliest through the most interesting period of British history, accommodating the study to modern systems." Original full leather boards, lightly worn on the edges, expertly rebacked in full leather with five raised bands and a leather spine label. Large quarto measuring over 11 3/4" (301mm). Note: Plate 6 is listed in the list of plates, but is not present. Plate 20 is present, as listed in the list of plates. However, there is an entirely different plate, numbered 20* which is not listed in the list of plates. Additionally illustrated with several smaller engraved in-text illustrations.
