Beveled edge black cloth with gilt spine lettering, clean with only routine slight rubbing to extremities and parts of joints. xxiv + 340 + 16 (April 1891 pub. catalogue); opening front gutter sealed with black cloth strip (end-papers being black) , incipient gutter opening before t.p., and to rear gutter, otherwise very clean, tight and unmarked. Blake, of course, plus the Brontes, Newton, Herschel, Faraday, George Eliot, Balzac, Michelangelo, Flaubert etc. etc. all get mentioned as do Phrenology and brain functioning, much use of term 'neuropathy'. Does not, in this work, mention eugenics or degeneration, unlike Max Nordau's 'Degeneration' with which it has some affinities.
