About this Item
New York: Random House, 1948. First Printing. A near-fine copy in black cloth with gilt and blue lettering to the front panel and spine, with flaking to a few gilt characters. A previous owner's bookplate is attached to the front paste-down. The dustwrapper is bright and whole with minute loss of material at the spine ends. Both book and jacket are immaculate with no markings of any kind. In the small town of Oxford, Mississippi, a white man named Vinson Gowrie is murdered while a black man named Lucas Beauchamp stands accused and is put in jail. The family of the murdered man threatens to storm the jail and lynch the black man. A sixteen-year-old boy named Charles ?Chick? Mallison is convinced of Lucas?s innocence and sets out to prove it. But the plot thickens and Chick finds himself deep into a murder mystery. Intruder was a well-received early novel, called by the New York Times "his stirring, very great chronicle. For sheer virtuosity in prose Faulkner has no American rival since Melville and James.".
