" printed on upper covers, elephant folio (16-7/16 inches [41.7 cm] tall), pp. [vol. 282] 4 (covers), (313) - 335, (336) ; [vol. 283] 4 (covers), (337) - 359, (360), illustrated throughout. Volume 282 with outer wrapper freed from staples but present, toning to edges and some foxing throughout (VG), volume 283 with light toning and very occasional foxing (VG+). Contains the first American publication of "Greville Fane" by Henry James, "The German Chicago" by Mark Twain and "Diana's Dogs" by Andrew Lang. Exceedingly scarce thus as the expected survival rate of such a weekly paper would be very low indeed. This Henry James short story appeared in the October 1, 1892 and October 8, 1892 issues of the Illustrated News of the World, printed from the original blocks of the Illustrated London News, where the first UK edition of this short story appeared in two parts in September 1892. "Greville Fane" first appeared in book form in "The Real Thing and Other Tales" in 1893. The tale was one of several short stories written by James while he sought to become successful in writing for the Stage. During this period he determined to write only short stories and not novels, so that he could focus his time and energy on his theatrical efforts. The story originated in an anecdote (not in a nice way) about the novelist Anthony Trollope, who was famed for his prodigious industry as a novelist. Trollope trained his younger son Frederic to become a novelist [similar to the protagonist in this story] but the son chose instead to be a sheep farmer in Australia. Ref.
