Nicolson is famous for his thorough, pragmatic approach to boat building and preventive maintenance. This is not a reworking of his earlier book, Build Your Own Boat , but a detailed look at many major and minor repairs/improvements that boat owners can undertake to make their crafts more seaworthy and/or functional. Included are tips on improving performance by modifying sails, rigging, hulls; and information on fitting extra bunks or making the present ones more useful, on making a cockpit table, on installing ventilators, rigging ladders, etc. Nicolson's advice is cautious; he urges owners to take the extra time and expense to do the job correctly and in a way that enhances the beauty of the boat.
