About this Item
A scarce historical novel about the father of modern English Renaissance and classical architecture by the preeminent English writer about the history of architecture, Bruce Allsopp. In addition to being an architect and painter, Inigo Jones was the theatrical designer for many royal masques, often in coordination with Ben Jonson. It was this aspect of Jones's work that caught Allsopp's eye, and this novel deals with a production of Ben Jonson's Pleasure Reconciled by Virtue. Published in 1975 by Scorpio Pres, London, this is a first printing of the first edition, in Near-Fine condition and in a Near-Fine dust jacket. The book is square and solid. Completely clean and unmarked inside. The blue covers are also completely clean but due to the low quality of the materials used by Scorpio, they have taken on a slightly mottled appearance over time. There is no rub wear to edges or corners, but the corners, although not bumped, are just very slightly curved inwards. The dust jacket is not price-clipped and has no chips or tears but does have a little wear around the edges. It also has a little tanning from exposure to sunlight along the spine and along the edges of the covers. A very nice first edition of a very scarce book. Will be bubble-wrapped and shipped in a box.
