The first edition of this scarce work in a full tree calf prize binding, with the gilt crest of Cirencester Royal Agricultural College to the front board, gilt detailing to the spine, and marbled end papers and edges. Prize bookplate to the front paste down from the Royal Agricultural College, dated 1905. Louis Compton Miall (1842-1921) was an English palaeontologist and biologist, who published many works on natural history. A practical guide for beginners, describing injurious and useful insects, with advice on identification. This work encompasses beetles, moths and butterflies, bees and bee-like insects, two-winged flies, aphids and scale insects, and other common insects. It also includes advice and examples of mitigating damage from insects. Illustrated with diagrams throughout. In a full tree calf prize binding. Externally generally smart, with rubbing to the extremities and joints, and cracking to the head of the front joint. A small loss to the leather to the front board. Gilt remains bright.
