For as long as humans have existed, insects have existed, too. Wherever we’ve traveled, they’ve traveled, too. Yet we hardly know them, not even the ones we’re closest to: those that eat our food, share our beds, and live in our homes.
Organizing his book alphabetically with one entry for each letter, weaving together brief vignettes, meditations, and extended essays, Hugh Raffles embarks on a mesmerizing exploration of history and science, anthropology and travel, economics, philosophy, and popular culture to show us how insects have triggered our obsessions, stirred our passions, and beguiled our imaginations.
Raffles offers us a glimpse into the high-stakes world of Chinese cricket fighting, the deceptive courtship rites of the dance fly, the intriguing possibilities of queer insect sex, the vital and vicious role locusts play in the famines of west Africa, how beetles deformed by Chernobyl inspired art, and how our desire and disgust for insects has prompted our own aberrant behavior.
Deftly fusing the literary and the scientific, Hugh Raffles has given us an essential book of reference that is also a fascination of the highest order.

Store description
We work from home, and our business is 95% internet-based, but our new location allows us to have retail trade by chance or appointment. Please Call First to make sure we'll be here, and that we carry the kinds of books you're interested in. We have lots of 'good reads', but much of our inventory is a bit scholarly or obscure. We don't have mass market paperbacks, or popular authors like James Patterson or Danielle Steele, unless the book would be signed.

Terms of sale
Prices listed on-line are NET TO ALL. SHIPPING: We apologize for the rates listed for overseas shipping, but the Postal Service has discontinued surface mail for books, and our only option is now airmail. Also, please note: If a book is large or has a shipping weight of over 4 pounds, international costs can run twice what is listed for the default rates. However, if a book costs us only $25 to ship, and the default shipping is $40, we will reduce the shipping costs accordingly. (Please keep in mind that ABE's credit card discount % also applies to shipping, so it's not to the penny, but rather to our approximate cost.)
Shipping terms
All dust jackets have mylar applied before shipping, and all books are boxed for shipping. Most orders received by noon go out that day.
