Erste Ausgabe der Beschreibung seiner berühmten Integrationsmaschine. - Der irische Ingenieur, Physiker und Erfinder James Thomson (1822-1892), Bruder von William Thomson, dem späteren Lord Kelvin, beschreibt hier den von ihm erfundenen mechanischen Integrator, der über ein System von Wellen und Getrieben zusammengekoppelt ist. "Die technische Realisierung war jedoch an der Forderung gescheitert, daß die Integrierelemente zwar möglichst genau arbeiten sollten, daß sie aber gleichzeitig die Kräfte für die Bewegung der angekoppelten Rechenelemente erzeugen mußten" (Petzold, moderne Rechenkünstler). - Exlibris.
