William Sanford Evans (1869-1949) was a Manitoba politician who was mayor of Winnipeg from 1909 to 1911 and Manitoba's Conservative leader from 1933 to 1936. In the interim he was chairman of the Georgian Bay Canal Commission, a government body which seriously considered the possibility of a deep inland waterway from Georgian Bay to Montreal. Costs proved prohibitive and although discussions for such a system continued will into the 1920s the idea of undertaking such a project finally died. Booklet includes information on Lake Superior freight traffic, nationality of vessels, load factors, principal commodities, traffic on Lake Michigan, future development, export wheat, 1915 ocean freight rates, and Canadian bank returns.
