A scarce first edition copy of this historical book regarding the literary history of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. A scarce first edition. Smartly bound in full calf with gilt detail. An eighteenth century historical book regarding the literary history of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, throughout the late Middle Ages, the early Renaissance and the early modern period. Featuring sections on the decline of education in Rome, the invasions of the Normans, new influences from the Middle East. and the effects of the crusades. This work is widely attributed to the poet, Charles Philpot. Philpot was part of Emmanuel College in Cambridge, where he won the Seatonian Prize for his poem, 'Faith: a vision'. With a bookplate for one 'Joseph Jones' to the front paste-down and another for one 'Peter M. Scott' to the front free endpaper. A-S16 In full calf binding. Externally, very smart with some rubbing to the edges. Fading to the spine. Light marks to the boards. Bookplate to the front paste-down and to the front free endpaper. Some offsetting to the edges of the free endpapers. A few marks to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age-toned with a few scattered spots but otherwise very bright and clean. Some neat pencil annotations from the previous owner throughout. Very Good Indeed. Seller Inventory # 838G23
