About this Item
8vo. xi, [1], 290 pp. figs., index. Original mauve blind- and gilt-stamped cloth. Library markings: bookplate & embossed stamp of Magee University. Very good. First edition. Deliciously reviewed by the highly respected, and thorough, London, Edinburgh and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science. "Dr. Tarleton remarks that it is a matter of much importance that the acquisition of a competent knowledge of the Theory of Attractions should be made as easy as possible. His object in the present work is to assist in doing this, and so he writes for Students and not for Professors. Though there is much of new presentment of the details of the work, he naturally, nay necessarily, draws extensively upon previous authorities, more especially upon Maxwell's 'Electricity and Magnetism,' Thomson and Tait's 'Natural Philosophy,' and Dr. Roth's recent treatise on the subject in vol. ii. of his 'Analytical Statics.' The main problems are, as he points out, to find the resultant force between two bodies, and to determine the distributions of electricity and magnetism which take place under given conditions. . . " ΓΆΒ Β" vol. XLVII-fifth series, Jan.-June 1899, p. 572. Seller Inventory # RW1259
