Copson (1901-1980) was a distinguished British mathematician whose research included analysis and mathematical physics, and who later became Regius Professor of Mathematics at the University of St Andrews. This became one of Copson's principal mathematical texts and remained in use for several decades, subsequently appearing in further editions and reprintings. Its presentation is particularly noteworthy for the clarity and economy with which Copson develops a demanding subject. The book treats the classical theory of functions of a complex variable, including analytic functions, contour integration, conformal representation, analytic continuation, infinite products, gamma functions and Bessel functions; much of the underlying mathematics remains integral to modern complex analysis. …
