A rare to see full first edition set of this renowned work, in a stunning Bickers full calf binding. All first editions. Very rare to see a full first edition set. A complete eight volume set. Illustrated with one monochrome plate to "Vol I". Eleven monochrome plates to "Vol II", with two folding plans with sections hand coloured. A folding colour frontispiece and to "Vol III", and twelve monochrome plates to "Vol III", most being folding plates. Nine plates to "Vol IV", with four having hand coloured elements, and many being folding. Ten plates to "Vol V", seven being maps, and three plans, all but one including hand coloured elements. A folding frontispiece map with hand coloured elements to "Vol VI". A frontispiece with hand coloured elements, and eight monochrome plates including folding maps. A folding frontispiece map with hand coloured elements, and six plates to "Vol VIII", with many being folding with hand coloured elements. Collated, all complete.Written by Alexander William Kinglake, a noted English travel writer and historian, best known for this work, which is generally considered to be his magnum opus. This renowned work provides a historical account of the 1853-4 Crimean War, discussing the political landscape prior, the history and cause of the war, and the events of the war up to the death of Lord Raglan. Beautifully bound by Bickers & Son in full calf with gilt tooling to the spine. Bound in full calf. Externally very smart with the odd slight mark to the boards, slight rubbing to the extremities and joints, and slight fading to the spines. Internally, binding at title page to "Vol V" strained, otherwise firmly bound with bright and generally clean pages, with only the odd minor spot. Binder's stamp to the front blanks. Very Good Indeed.
