First Tauchnitz Edition (First Thus). Octavo. 278 pp. Original burgundy-red cloth binding with red calf leather spine title label lettered in gilt and three gilt bands. Printer?s ink and printer?s stain to the top edges. Original red silk bookmark ribbon present and intact.

Contents clean, bright, and generally unmarked; small stain on 260?261 pp. and epilogue, not interfering with text. Neat previous owner?s stamp to the rear endpaper. Binding tight and intact, though slanted; text block firm. Spine crown and heel with wear; cloth rubbed with darkening and surface wear consistent with age; corners worn. Gilt remains bright.
