London: John Murray, 1886. An important milestone for Ireland was Gladstone's passage of the Land Law Act (1881) that established rights for Irish tenant farmers. Five years later he introduced the first "Home Rule" Bill. Here are his arguments in favor of the [defeated] law. This is a Near Fine copy of the first English Edition [also published in America, with its large Irish diaspora]. In a lovely binding, with mottled paper-covered boards; spine and tips of mottled leather; ruling and titling on the spine in gilt. Clean text; 58 pages; light spotting/browning to the page ends [really the only defect]. This book has an intersting ASSOCIATION, with the armorial bookplate of Samuel Ashton Thompso [later Yates] on the front paste-down. Yates (1843-1903) was a member of a prominent and wealthy slaveholding family in Liverpool. First English Edition. Quarter-Bound. Near Fine/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
