About this Item
Small octavo, brown cloth; spine missing, covers present but detached; signature on the front endpaper. First edition. W.E.B. Du Bois's personal copy, with his ownership signature stamped on the front pastedown.---- Abolitionist Lydia Maria Child's classic biography of Isaac T. Hopper, a Quaker tailer, who was active the antislavery movement. In Philadelphia, and later in New York, Hopper aided fugitive slaves and served on the board of the American Antislavery Society. Du Bois regarded Hopper as a "drive force: of the Underground Railroad. Historian extraordinaire, Child's biography no doubt served Du Bois well. Books from the civil rights icon's library are notoriously rare. We have seen no other example. Seller Inventory # ABE-1701629740340
