Description from book flap: "The tramways of the Isle of Man, with their vintage rolling-stock and some twenty surviving miles of double track, still continue to delight the connoisseur and to carry more than half a million passengers each year. Here, for the first time, the story of how so characteristic a feature of the Island came to exist in its present form is told in full with a wealth of historical, engineering and social detail. The story is coloured by late Victorian and Edwardian personalities as forceful as any of their day; engineering ability and physical craftsmanship of an order now largely lost are reveals. The origins and development of the electric tramways system, now strung across some of the Island's most rugged scenery, are described and there is an extensive accoun tof the Douglas horse tramway, its even greater antiquity disguised by its present day joy-ride imagine. Two lines now vanished are recalled and there are descriptions of cliff lifts, past and present. Adding much to the interest of hte text is the exceptionally large number of illustrations, comprising 69 photographs and some 145 line drawings and maps, most of them specially drawn for the book."
