Item description from seller

Please note: this address is *not* reprinted in the Rev. Fritchman's posthumous collection of sermons and addresses entitled "For the Sake of Clarity." Offered is "The Issues at Syracuse: A First Hand Report on the Biennial Unitarian Conference, October 29-November 1, 1959 at Syracuse, New York, and The Action Taken on Merger of The Unitarian-Universalist Denominations" written by the Rev. Stephen H. Fritchman, Minister of the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles. Dated November 8, 1959 (and possibly given as an address to his congregation on that date), the report was published in mimeographed form by the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles. Measuring 8-1/2" by 14", the report contains six pages of text. A few brief excerpts: "On Saturday, October 31, 1959 in Syracuse, New York, the American Unitarian Association and the Universalist Church of America formally voted to endorse a plan that would unite them into a single denomination of 175,000 adult members pending approval of local parish voting in a plebiscite during the early months of 1960. The vote was 756-80" - "This report will attempt to summarize the issues and the results of what may prove to be an historic convention for the cause of liberal religion in America" - "The merger movement has been actively under way since 1947, and irregularly before that for a century. May, 1960 will very definitely dispose of the issue for the predictable future, up or down, as the case may be." The rear page contains the text of Article II - Purposes and Objectives - from The Proposed Constitution of the Unitarian-Universalist Association. Folded once, as issued; paper age-browned. The REVEREND STEPHEN H. [HOLE] FRITCHMAN (1902-1981), author, liberal humanist, and social and antiwar activist, was the minister of the progressive First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles, California, from 1948 to 1969.…
