TOLKIEN'S "THE LORD OF THE RINGS" prospectus | flyer program 1978, Loring Publishing Corp., Printed in U.S.A. 30,4 x 23,8 cm (11,97 × 9,37 inch.) 20 pages colors. Nice copy. J.R.R. TOLKIEN | Ralph BAKSHI | Tom YOUNG J.R.R. TOLKIEN'S "THE LORD OF THE RINGS" prospectus | flyer 1978, Loring Publishing Corp., Printed in U.S.A. The Lord of the Rings, an animated film directed by Ralph Bakshi and released in 1978, was the first ambitious cinematic adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien’s work. A British-American production distributed by United Artists, it loosely covers the events of the first two volumes (The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers), ending the story after the Battle of Helm’s Deep. Created with a blend of traditional animation and rotoscoping – a process involving tracing over live-action footage frame by frame – the film stands out for its dark aesthetic, stylized backgrounds, and at times psychedelic visual effects. Leonard Rosenman’s score, combining symphonic orchestration with contemporary accents, heightens the dramatic atmosphere. Upon its release, the work received mixed reviews: praised for its technical boldness and the fidelity of certain passages, but criticized for its narrative compression and abrupt ending. Despite remaining unfinished – the announced sequel was never made – this feature film had a significant influence on the visual imagination of later adaptations, with Peter Jackson acknowledging that some of his shot compositions were inspired by it. Now a cult classic among animation enthusiasts and Tolkien admirers, it remains a landmark in the history of fantasy cinema.
