The book was originally published in the USA by Farrar, Straus & Giroux in 1992. ***Very good in black cloth-covered boards with white titles to the spine. The boards are clean with just some light indentations to the boards. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Corners quite sharp, just slight creasing to the top corner tips. Page block edges clean. No reading lean. Spine tight. Internally also very good with no inscriptions, but with a light Waterstone's Booksellers ink stamp to the front free endpaper. Pages clean, but the paper stock has tanned as usual. No tears. No creases. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour-illustrated dustwrapper which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £14.99 net. The dustwrapper is largely complete, without any chips or tears, but there is slight loss at the head and tail of the spine and corner tips, and the extremities are heavily rubbed and creased. No fading. ***224mm x 140mm. 160 pages. ***Contents: Car Crash While Hitchhiking, Two Men, Out on Bail, Dundun, Work, Emergency, Dirty Wedding, The Other Man, Happy Hour, Steady Hands on Seattle General, Beverly Home. ***'Denis Hale Johnson (July 1, 1949 - May 24, 2017) was an American novelist, short-story writer, and poet. He is perhaps best known for his debut short story collection, "Jesus' Son" (1992). His most successful novel, "Tree of Smoke" (2007), won the National Book Award for Fiction. Johnson was twice shortlisted for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Altogether, Johnson was the author of nine novels, one novella, two books of short stories, three collections of poetry, two collections of plays, and one book of reportage. His final work, a book of short stories titled "The Largesse of the Sea Maiden", was published posthumously in 2018. "Jesus' Son" has been variously described as: seminal, legendary, transcendent, a classic, and a masterpiece. It was adapted into the 1999 film of the same name, which starred Billy Crudup. Johnson has a cameo role in the film as a man who has been stabbed in the eye by his wife. ***'Ten stories by the author of "Resuscitation of a Hanged Man - one of America's most original writers. All of these stories, set in the Midwest and West of the United States, are narrated by a young man, a recovering alcoholic and heroin addict, whose dependencies have led him to petty crime, cruelty, betrayal and various kinds of loss. Many of them are centred around The Vine, a bar in an Iowa town where the narrator meets his friends and forms alliances "based on something erroneous, some basic misunderstanding that hadn't yet come to light."'' (Quote taken from the back panel of the dustwrapper). ***A first impression of the first UK edition of this collection of stories, complete in its original dustwrapper. Johnson's acclaimed short story collection, narrated by a young man who is a recovering alcoholic and heroin addict, is very uncommon, especially in the UK first edition. The book was made into a 1999 film of the same name. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

The most successful stories in the collection offer moments of startling clarity. In "Car Crash While Hitchhiking," for instance, the narrator feels most alive while in the presence of another's loss: "Down the hall came the wife. She was glorious, burning. She didn't know yet that her husband was dead.... What a pair of lungs! She shrieked as I imagined an eagle would shriek. It felt wonderful to be alive to hear it! I've gone looking for that feeling everywhere." In "Work," while "salvaging" copper wire from a flooded house to fund their habits, the narrator and an acquaintance stop to watch the nearly unfathomable sight of a beautiful, naked woman paragliding up the river. Later the narrator learns that the house once belonged to his down-and-out accomplice and that the woman is his estranged wife. "As nearly as I could tell, I'd wandered into some sort of dream that Wayne was having about his wife, and his house," he reasons. Such is the experience for the reader. More Genet than Bukowski, Denis Johnson lures us into a misfit soul's dream from which he can't awake. --Langdon Cook
