2 works bound together: SECOND EDITION OF DE JURE GENTIUM 1684 and FIRST EDITION OF ERIS SCANDICA 1686. Text in Latin and some in Greek. Thick 4to, approximately 200 x 170 mm, 8 x 6¾ inches, the 2 volumes bound together in full hard vellum, all edges red, covers slightly bowed, ink title on spine mostly rubbed away, pages slightly trimmed in upper margin, no loss of lettering. DE JURE NATURAE: LACKS PORTRAIT FRONTISPIECE, replaced with a good tipped in FACSIMLE on old paper. Pages: [16], 1-1344, [18] - index and errata, title page printed red and black. Occasional very pale age-browning, occasional light foxing and small brown mark, some misnumbering, catchwords and signatures correct, pale browning to last 2 leaves of index, occasional turning crease, otherwise very good condition. ERIS SCANDICA: pages: [12], 1-420, [4] - index and errata, 2 prelim leaves have the top margin neatly repaired, not affecting text, pale staining to pages 194-200, occasional pale age-browning and spotting, otherwise a very good copy. Both books in very good condition, (De Jure Naturae lacking portrait as noted). There was a copy of the first edition of the first work in the John Adams library. Samuel von Pufendorf (1632 1694) was a German jurist, political philosopher, economist and historian. He was ennobled in 1684 by Charles XI of Sweden a few months before his death at 62. Among his achievements are his commentaries and revisions of the natural law theories of Thomas Hobbes and Hugo Grotius. Pufendorf was familiar to American political writers such as Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and Thomas Jefferson. His political concepts are part of the cultural background of the American Revolution. Pufendorf is seen as an important precursor of Enlightenment in Germany. He was involved in constant quarrels with clerical circles and frequently had to defend himself against accusations of heresy, despite holding largely traditional Christian views on matters of dogma and doctrine, (Wikipedia).
