First Edition of this milestone first picture book for children by an African American woman. A journalist and writer of children's books in the era of the Harlem Renaissance, Ellen Tarry was at the vanguard of a movement to bring Black characters and portraits of Black life into children's literature. In this Janie Belle is an abandoned Black baby found by a postal carrier on the streets of New York and embraced by White nurses and doctors at a city hospital. Illustrated covers. The book has some foxing on the covers and a bt of edge wear. There's a vintage World War II era "Artists for Victory" stamp on the front pastedown page. Seller Inventory # 013627
