A journalist and writer of children's books in the era of the Harlem Renaissance, Ellen Tarry was at the vanguard of a movement to bring Black characters and portraits of Black life into children's literature. In this Janie Belle is an abandoned Black baby found by a postal carrier on the streets of New York and embraced by White nurses and doctors at a city hospital. Illustrated covers.
