Toshi Yoshida, under the guidance of his father, Hiroshi Yoshida, began at age thirteen to learn carving and printing from artisans of the old school. These men had been chosen by the elder Yoshida to realize his own prints; they were experts, and having learned by apprenticeship themselves they knew how to put a youngster through the mill. He learned the craft and he learned respect for it. Hiroshi Yoshida was, as his son says, more traditional than modern. But he could do anything his artisans could, he was alert to new effects, and as his own publisher he brought the making of his prints under his own control, under the control of the artist. These were big steps towards the position taken by the creative print makers of today, and his son found no difficulty in moving the rest of the way. He is at home with both traditional and modern prints.
