First edition; only 2000 copies printed. In publisher's red cloth with gilt stamped spine, decorated and lettered in black on cover, ruled in blind on rear, grey floral patterned end papers. First edition with original verse in Chapter XXXIII [removed from subsequent printings] and with faint inverted comma before 'King' on title page. Scott 6 : Whatmore F5. London: Smith, Elder & Co. (1887) 336 pages + 8 pages of ads at rear. VG: Slightly sunned spine with soft ends, pushed tips, modest wear and soil. Toned end papers and piece out at top of first ad page at rear.
