361 pages inc 9 page index and advert leaf at rear. 8th thousand, in original green and gilt cloth with small circular motif on cover and gilt titles on the spine. Engraved title page with circular engraving, original dark brown endpapers with "B & C Treacher, Brighton" bookseller label inside cover and "Burn of London" binders label inside back cover. Front hinge shows but all firm, name of "F. V. B. Rickford Howells" to ffep. Some rust mark to gutter at preface pages Vi +Vii, not affecting text. A very good copy. Small 12 mo. *Author was founder of Punch in 1841, and editor all his life until 1870, he also helped found the "Field" and the "Illustrated London News" with its first editor Henry Mayhew in 1843. A Shakespearian character actor, appeared on stage with Dickens and all round good-egg. Buried in St Margarets Ifield and has a blue plaque in Crawley. Seller Inventory # 4480

We have been operating on and off since 1977 and our stock is varied, leaning towards antiquarian and 19th century with the addition of original aquatint and lithographic, or woodcut engravings. Also maps and Ephemera - in fact, anything interesting on paper really. We have in stock every item we list. We do not use stock photographs, but photograph each item individually. We very rarely use "fine" or "mint" as a description, mainly due to the age and the fact that 99.9% of what we sell has been pre-owned and therefor Fine would not be a term for a book we sell despite its fine-like appearance. We always take items back unreservedly if not in the condition as described. We always try to describe fully.
