About this Item
Alfred A. Knopf, New York. 1928. 216 pages. First edition, first printing with 1928 on the title page, and 1928 on the copyright page, with no later printings listed. Book is housed in original, rare DJ. Laid-in is the uncommon, 1928 publisher's promo page sent out to booksellers, to promote the upcoming title. Clearly it did its job as this title went through multiple printing even before its official release date. Book is tight. Binding and hinges are sound. Original black sheen on cloth panels is present and bright. Titles stamped in gold with circular illustration with hand holding civilization, in gold design. Pages and endpapers are bright and clean. A vintage, previous owner's name is neatly written on front endpaper, and dated 1929. Panels show minimal shelf-rubbing along edges. Flyleaf has a small closed tear at base. Rare original DJ shows shallow chipping along edges. DJ shows light soiling, and rubbing along folds. A couple of tiny closed edge tears. Rear interior flap of DJ is absent. Knopf's original hype letter, dated November 5, 1928 is on parchment-like paper, and neatly folded into quarters and laid in. Paper is strong and not brittle, easily flattened. This is Gibran's masterpiece on Jesus Christ, told from the perspective of seventy five different points of view, both good and bad, of those who knew him. A masterful illustration of the prophet and poet, by the most celebrated poet of his day. First edition, first printing, in rare DJ, with Knopf's original hype promo. Rare. Seller Inventory # 003565
