About this Item
As new condition maroon boards, black spine, and silver spine lettering contained in an as new condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes Author Dedication and Author's Note. " "Rocks" - that's what the locals called the one hundred fifty-foot-long man-made jetty where Leonard Everett Fisher spent endless hours as a schoolboy. From his front porch - about 50 yards from the jetty - he could view all that passed in and out of New York by water. The place was Sea Gate, the time was "long ago," and the jetty was the "transport to life" for this noted author and artist. From his vantage point on the rocks, Leonard Everett Fisher presents a remarkable view of the world during the 1930s in this extraordinary novel that is part reminiscence, part imagination. By mingling factual events with fictinalized characters, he also provides a fascinating depiction of the social and environmental history of Lower New York Bay. There's the bittersweet saga of Horace Monash, rumored by the locals to be in training as a long distance swimmer for the Olympics during the summer of 1935. There are other eccentric characters like T.D., an ex-convict who prefers life on the inside, and Plaut, the Prince of Peace, who sells newspapers and expects to make a miracle come to pass. There's also an artist who makes magic with her paintings, and the news correspondent who seems to be able to predict the future. Or, at least, to realize that the view from the jetty is the future . As the winter winds of 1935-36 blast the jetty with arctic air, the world beyond is changing rapidly. Headlines scream the news of war across the sea. But, on the rocks, there is peace and the constancy of the sea. At least for now. Part history, part poetry, and part adventure, this nostalgic reflection chronicles more than the years from 1934-1939. It captures the adventure, danger, dreams and excitement that the jetty and its world provided for a boy growing into young manhood. Seller Inventory # 007533
