John Masefield was an author. Many knew him only as a poet; and indeed he was - a very fine one, and he was appointed as Poet Laureate for England, in which post he served longer than all but one other Poet Laureate : Tennyson. Masefield's most excellent productions were prolific. He produced, not only poetry, but essays, plays and novels for both adults and children. His writing is particularly rich, his poems memorable , and his prose sonorous. "The Taking of Helen" is a short retelling of the legend of Helen of Troy, Menelaus, Paris and Nireus. It is a polite and concisely written account, lovely in its brevity, but profound in its understanding. The other pieces in the book are, "Letters", "Play-Writing", and Fox-Hunting".
