The first edition of this very scarce commemorative work written by George Jacob Holyoake in attempt to defend the reputation and legacy of John Stuart Mill after his death. First edition. Very scarce work. Unbound. Written by English editor and secularist, George Jacob Holyoake, who wrote this piece following the death of English philosopher and politician, John Stuart Mill. In this essay, Holyoake sought to defend the reputation and legacy of John Stuart Mill, presenting him as a friend to the working classes and to women, as well as a fighter against injustice. With chapters entitled 'The Trouble he Took to Serve the People', 'His Religious Independence', 'Honourable Discrimination of the Pulpit' and many others. Written as a response to a letter circulated in The Times, which painted Mill in a less than positive light. Unbound. Externally, a few marks to the front page and remnants to the backstrip. Internally, textblock is firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Good Only.
