Contemporary board covers, front board detached but complete. Boards and spine much worn and bumped. Small contemporary signature 'F. G. Wilkinson'. In a different hand, the text is packed with lively contemporary annotations, such as "A bigoted brute", "Rather sour, this", "He should take as well as give", etc. B1 and B2 missing; the annotator comments "Two pages lost = all the better".These comments peter out after about page 30. Although in only acceptable condition, the item has significant historical interest in that the comments add life to Johnson's text, illustrating the keen interest and emotions that his views aroused, and demonstrating how his 'table talk' was used by his contemporaries.
