1st edition. Very Good HC, no DJ. Ex-library. Rebound in maroon cloth with gilt stamped titles and library numbers on spine; all edges sprinkled red; pale blue end papers. Clean covers and spine; few light scuffs; slightly rubbed at spine end corners and fore corner - not split or frayed; tightly bound; old library bookplate (Berkshire Atheneum) on front pastedown; title page has narrow rust stain from paper clip; 1 prelim leaf has faint damp stain at top fore corner; otherwise bright, clean interior; small label on rear pastedown - no other library markings. By chaplain of Clerkenwell Prison, describes life and circumstances in jail; holds forth with some interesting ideas on suicide (women are prone to it because they are hysterical), workhouses, atheism, success or failure of prison systems. Includes great 35 pp explanation of rhyming slang with many examples. 12mo, 259 + 34 pp adverts at rear.
