A Swiss artist and ethnographer, Rudolph Kurz (1818-1871) traveled through the American West, documenting traditional life ways of the Crow, Sioux, and Cheyenne tribes and their culture, prior to the American Civil War. Kurz traveled form New Orleans to St. Louis and Fort Union, and was sometimes employed as a clerk at Fort Union and Berthold, and makes observational comments on the gold rush and Mexican-American War.A valuable diary of Indian Life.
